Across the fields, coiled black pipes unravel until they reach the end of the headland. With each pump of the jet, the pipe is hauled in, curling back around itself like film winding tightly into place.
The nozzle turns and the water soars into the sky showering down onto the crop. Channels in the beds guide it through the ridges, soaking the ground, replenishing the surface.
The potato passes through cycles of containment and release - hidden underground, lifted into light, returned to the dark store, then sent out again. I am interested in this not only as agriculture, but as something inherited: a rhythm of labour, care and maintenance that shaped the place I grew up in.
